Breakthrough in Dynamic Positioning Technology

ABB has introduced its new Dynamic Positioning Class 2 (DP2) control system, verified during sea trials on DEME’s wind turbine installation vessel Norse Wind. This innovation marks a significant step forward in industrial automation and maritime control systems. The solution eliminates standby mode, improves operational safety, and enhances decision-making for offshore operations.

Integration of Marine Pilot Control and Azipod® Propulsion

By combining ABB Ability™ Marine Pilot Control with Azipod® propulsion units, the vessel achieves seamless system integration. This synergy unifies dynamic positioning, maneuvering, and transit functions into one intuitive interface. As a result, operators gain precise control across all operational stages, reinforcing reliability in complex offshore environments.

Enhanced Safety Through Real-Time Vessel Modeling

The DP2 solution leverages dynamic vessel and thruster models that update continuously. These models account for hydrodynamic changes caused by vessel speed, ensuring accurate responses during critical maneuvers. Moreover, ABB’s AX Bridge levers and user interface provide operators with a clear situational overview, strengthening safety standards in maritime automation.

Verified Performance During Sea Trials

Sea trials onboard Norse Wind confirmed the DP2 system’s continuous control capability. Integrated with ABB’s PEMS™ power and energy management system, the solution supports closed bus-tie operations. Therefore, vessels can operate with higher energy efficiency while maintaining redundancy and resilience in power distribution.

DEME’s Perspective on Operational Benefits

According to Jeroen Vanden Branden, Head of Fleet at DEME, the DP2 system sets a new benchmark for vessel control. He emphasized its intuitive design, modern interface, and ability to deliver real-time insights. In addition, DEME’s sister ship Norse Energi will adopt the same solution when entering service in early 2026, highlighting industry confidence in ABB’s technology.
