Analysis of ABB Collaborative Robot Family Technology (4)

  • 2021-04-23
When YuMi was exhibited, everyone was commenting that YuMi and Roberta formed a good match. YuMi had a small load and did fine movements, while Roberta had a heavy load and a low price, which could attack another market. It's just that I didn't see Roberta anymore. If you look for information about Roberta, the link will jump to ABB's official website. However, there is no place for Roberta on ABB's official website, and he is ultimately a child of someone else's family.

Back to Roberta, there are currently 3 different loads found in the series, 4KG, 8KG, and 12KG. It should be noted that this load definition is quite interesting compared to UR. UR first had UR3, UR5, and UR10, and each of Roberta's loads was a little larger than UR. And in 2015, collaborative robots with a load of 12KG have not yet been seen, and only in the past two years have collaborative robots with a load of more than 12KG appeared. (The variants of industrial robots such as FANUC are not counted), so ABB's acquisition of Gomtec back then was very visionary.

In addition, Gomtec itself has a very strong background. Although there are only 25 employees, the founder Bernd Gombert has worked at the German Aerospace Center for more than ten years. One of his projects is the development of LBR.

Yes, it's DLR again, and it's LBR again! If you are not familiar with LBR, it doesn't matter, you must know iiwa, the strongest collaborative robot. So it’s really interesting. In the intelligent collaborative robot echelon, iiwa, Franka, Feixi, Siling, and Roberta are all inextricably related to DLR. They are either alumni or apprentices and their influence is evident.

However, in terms of force control, Roberta did not follow the route of his alumni, did not add joint force sensors, but adopted a current loop solution. This is probably why everyone said that Roberta is cheap in 2015. But for precise force control, Roberta also has an optional torque sensor to meet the needs of different customers.

Here comes the point, the problem of lights. Roberta also has interactive lights at the end, but like water lights, it can express different states through different colors and different flashing methods, which is much more beautiful than monotonous color changes.

And the interaction of teaching programming is also different from other companies (it is said to use the KEBA system). The end of the arm is not a button, but a sliding or turning method. You may have to watch the video to make it clearer. Unfortunately, I only watch it with my own eyes. Once, there was no time to figure out what structure was used.
